Research

The main focus of her research has been diseases of the aorta and aortic valve. In particular studying the causes of aneurysms, including those in patients with connective tissue disease, diseases of the aorta related to bicuspid aortic valve and minimally invasive aortic valve replacement.

In recent years she has led the programme of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), where a bundle of care is provided to patients to improve their experience, reduce complications and improve short and long term quality of life.

She has up to seven full time research fellows who work under her direct supervision aiming for higher research degrees (MD Res and PhD). Some of the research areas include:

  • Assessment of quality of life, both physical and mental, before and after cardiac surgery.
  • Computational flow dynamics and abnormal flow in assessment of aortic aneurysm.
  • Genetic causes of aortic valve and diseases of the aorta.
  • Proteomic analysis of causes of aneurysm formation.
  • Neurological function and neurocognition during and following cardiac surgery.
  • Role of stem cells in the development of coronary artery disease
Marjan Jahangiri, Professor of Cardiac Surgery at St. George's Hospital, University London

She is a frequent invited speaker at national and international conferences. Marjan Jahangiri is the author of over 250 peer-reviewed articles and published abstracts. She is on the regular review board of several national and international academic journals.

She has successfully supervised several higher degrees, with 14 awarded MDRes and 11 PhDs where she has been the primary supervisor. The Research and the Clinical Team has been awarded several national and international prizes from the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons, The Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery of GB & Ireland, The American Associations of Thoracic Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Through the hard work of her trainees, their group has been awarded the following in recent years:

  • 2018. Aortic Medal. Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery of GB & Ireland
  • 2017. Aortic Medal. Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery of GB & Ireland
  • 2017. Ronald Edwards Medal. Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery of GB & Ireland
  • 2017. Bronze Medal for Research. American Association for Thoracic Surgery
  • 2016. Aortic Medal. Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery of GB & Ireland
  • 2015. Walton Lillehei Prize for Research Excellence. European Association for Cardiothroacic Surgery.
  • 2015. Ronald Edwards Medal. Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery of GB & Ireland

Research applications for fellowship can be made to Mrs. Nicole Radford, email: nradford@sgul.ac.uk
